The Significance of Retainers After Invisalign

Once the Invisalign treatment achieves the desired alignment, Dr. Taís Trevelin will most likely recommend a retainer. The reason is simple: after undergoing adjustments, teeth have a tendency to revert to their original positions. This is particularly true for youngsters whose bones are still developing. Retainers act as a guard against this regression, helping maintain the alignment achieved by Invisalign.

At our Dental Office in San Diego, Dr. Taís Trevelin advises patients on retainer choices post their Invisalign treatment:

Clear Retainer:
A familiar choice for Invisalign patients, these are removable, made of clear material, and generally last between 1 to 2 years.

Hawley Retainer:
A more robust option, made of metal and plastic, these are also removable and have an average lifespan of 2 to 8 years.

A Fixed Retainer: Fixed to the back of teeth, these are held in place by orthodontic adhesive. Primarily used for the lower teeth, they last between 4 to 10 years. The fixed retainer is a thin wire attached to the back of your front six teeth, from canine tooth to canine tooth. The wire is not visible and hardly noticeable and within a few days, you should barely feel it.

Whether you're nearing the end of your Invisalign treatment or merely considering it, understanding the next steps ensures you can maintain your beautifully aligned smile. To discuss further or address any queries, please reach out to our Dental Office in San Diego at (858) 679-8918.
