Reasons for and Process of Wisdom Teeth Extraction

When wisdom teeth are developing it is normal to experience some pain. This often happens between 17 and 21 years old. In cases where the pain escalates towards discomfort and it begins to interfere with daily life, it is time to consider visiting a dentist with an objective of getting the wisdom teeth removed. Most people are unwilling to take this route because it is considered an unwelcome and frightening dental treatment procedure. For the purpose of getting a pain-free, happy, and healthy mouth, the dentist might propose removal of the wisdom teeth.

Why remove wisdom teeth

An oral surgeon or dentist may recommend the removal of wisdom teeth even when such teeth are not, at the moment, causing any dental problems. The impacted tooth could grow at a certain angle interfering with neighboring teeth, i.e., the second molar. The wisdom teeth may also grow at some angle towards the back side of the mouth. The teeth might also grow perpendicular to the mouth as though lying down inside the jawbone. The wisdom teeth might as well grow upright but get trapped inside the jawbone.

Some dentists recommend that when a patient is beyond 20 years of age, it is appropriate to get an examination of the wisdom teeth if they have not already done so. Many people will be surprised to find that they have gone through the process of growing wisdom teeth without pain. Others will be happy to know that their occasional aches and pains can get cured by removing the wisdom teeth. The process of teeth removal can be done within a single day without the need to stay over in the inpatient section. It may not be possible to completely get rid of the little discomfort and pain that follows a surgery although the difference will be immediately noticeable in a few days. You will be thankful that the teeth got removed.

Prerequisite after tooth removal

Following the procedure of removing the wisdom teeth, the dentist may require you not to brush the teeth for the next 24 hours following the removal. This process may appear uninformed but it is crucial. It makes sure you do not propagate the clot that forms helping the gums to heal faster. Make sure to contact a qualified dentist prior to getting your wisdom teeth removed.

Risks involved

Most often there are no complications that follow wisdom teeth extraction. The process of removal may however require a skilled surgical approach which involves invasions into gum tissue and bone removal. Some of the rare complications may entail:

  • Socket infection from trapped food or bacteria
  • Damage to jawbone, sinuses, nerves, or surrounding teeth
  • Pain on the dry socket or exposed bone when the blood clot left after the surgical procedure is wiped from surgical wound or socket

Preparation for impacted tooth removal

The dentist could execute the extraction from an office. In instances where the impact is deep or where tooth extraction requires deep surgical procedures, the dentist could recommend visiting the oral surgeon.  The oral surgeon can numb the area with some local anaesthesia or suggest sedation in order to allow more comfort while they carry out the procedure.
